Iowa
Artisans Gallery hosts a show of painted furniture and home
accessories by STICKS, June 6 July 9. STICKS is the
phenomenally successful Iowa-based art business founded eleven
years ago by Sarah Grant-Hutchison and Jim Lueders. The show
opens with a reception during Gallery Walk, June 7, 5-8pm.
This self-guided tour of 15 downtown art venues is free and
open to the public.
STICKS
makes a wide range of heirloom-quality furniture painted in
bright colors and often featuring text. It is family-friendly.
In this show, the Gallery features a game table and chairs,
various side tables, a bench and chest, as well as their signature
wall mirrors, lamps and smaller items. Hundreds of other pieces
are available through special order. STICKS furniture is made
from start to finish in a large, architecture award-winning
warehouse where views of old oak trees grace every vantage
point. The process involves constructing the furniture from
regulation lumber, then a sequence of drawing, wood burning,
staining and painting the designs. Then come the final touches
such as hand painted knobs and a final coat of polyurethane.
Designs are derived from a series of themes, icons and color
palettes that galleries or clients may choose from, making
STICKS furniture easily customized.
Because
of their ability to deliver joyful, custom-designed pieces,
STICKS furniture has become a national phenomenon. Founder
Sarah Grant-Hutchison, the creative mastermind behind the
decoration, is a Des Moines resident and a graduate of the
University of Iowa. Jim Lueders coordinates the furniture
construction portion of the business.
