JOSEPH GIGLIERANO

Iowa Landscapes

March 3 - April 17, 2006

Early Morning Frost                                                Low Water

Giglierano grew up in a lively Italian neighborhood in Buffalo, New York, where he cultivated an interest in art at an early age. An accident resulted in the total loss of sight in one eye but did not deter him from competing in art exhibits against his older brother Al, who later became an accomplished commercial artist.  After serving in World War II, he enrolled in the Art Institute of Buffalo and then worked in the field of advertising. In the 1970’s he opened his own advertising business in southern Ohio but was forced to give it up a few years later when he suddenly lost most of the vision in his good eye due to a weak retina.  Now legally blind in both eyes, he had to regroup and figure out how he would make a living. Not being able to drive was an obstacle, but not insurmountable. He teamed up with his wife who drove him to visit clients and began selling advertising for a local newspaper.

After the Storm                                       The Long Road Home

After retiring, he moved to Iowa City in 1993.  The limited sight he had left in his good eye continued to decline due to a cataract.  The doctors were at first reluctant to do surgery, but when it became apparent that he had nothing to lose, the doctors removed the cataract with what he calls “amazing” results.  He felt like he had been given a second chance and started intensively painting again. Giglierano developed his own style and techniques for layering oil crayon colors and manipulating the pigment to add depth and texture, creating movement in clouds, trees and water. He enjoys capturing the seasonal changes in local landscapes around Iowa City.
