Wood & Form: Carved Vessels by Michael Bauermeister

October 8- November 14, 1999

Large-scale carved wood vessels by Michael Bauermeister are featured at Iowa Artisans Gallery, October 8-November 14. A resident of Augusta, Missouri, Bauermeister has work in prestigious galleries throughout the United States. An Opening Reception will be held during the downtown Gallery Walk, October 8, from 5-8 pm and Bauermeister will be in attendance. The Gallery Walk features joint opening receptions at 13 exhibit sites and is free and open to the public.

"Bauermeister creates sculptural vessels. I see them as receptacles for thoughts and poems and light," comments Astrid Bennett, manager of the Gallery. To achieve these unusual shapes, the artist cuts concentric rings from wide board and laminates them to form the rough shape, which he then carves to the final form. The piece is sanded, and tool marks are usually left visible. A variety of finishes and surface treatments are used. As the artist says, the final form is both "modern and primitive in feel, organic yet man-made, with even the material sometimes being hard to identify."

Bauermeister received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1979, and has been featured in national publications such as American Woodworker, American Craft and Fine Woodworking Design Book Three. He is a regular participant in the annual SOFA exposition in Chicago.
