Peter Kasper Woodworks
Peter Kasper is a studio furniture maker orignally from rural Eastern Iowa. We have a few pieces in our store and can also work with our customers to locate other pieces or create custom orders.
A 2013 graduate of Iowa State University's Art & Design Program, Kasper creates one-of-a-kind, limited edition and commission or special order pieces in his farm-baed studio. We at the Gallery appreciate his sense of surface and texture. He tells us, "materials and story are symbiotically related in my work. One cannot exist without the other. My work tells stories about the relationships between people and materials.
When I work, I connect with the wood. Close inspection of the raw material communicates a story. Details such as grain patterns, checks, nail holes, mineral streaks, spalting, knots and burls reveal a timeline in the life of the materials. These are the components of the wood's story to be told. Inspiration for a piece may come from the defining characteristics and an urge to share these characteristics.
In other cases, materials are chosen for their general traits. Then the wood tells a more literal or sculptural story. In this instance, materials are selected to carry the plot."
