Nancy Briggs - Des Moines, Iowa
Nancy has been featured on HGTV!
Nancy Briggs has been on the faculty of the Des Moines Art Center since 1986 and currently teaches ceramics to adults and children. Her work has been shown in regional and national juried exhibitions.
Following the ancient pottery tradition of raku, Nancy first throws or handbuilds her forms. When leather-hard, she carves them to reveal patterns of openwork. To produce raku, the pottery is quickly heated to melt the glaze, then is removed from the kiln while red hot (see photo above) and placed in sawdust to continue firing. The smoke gives the clay and glazes their variations in color and tone. Each is unique. Because of the shorter firing, raku is not meant for functional food serving and will not hold water. But these works are full of spirit.
